IRMS Maintenance

IRMS: Electron Impact Source Maintenance

Objectives

  • Gain hands-on experience in assembling/disassembling and cleaning an electron impact source, particularly used in isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) and conventional mass spectrometry.
  • Acquire basic knowledge for understanding and configuring an electron impact source used in IRMS.
  • Exchange on difficulties encountered by IRMS users.

Training Context

The training is provided by the SILVATECH. It will be conducted by staff from the Isotope Chemistry Unit (Loïc Louis, Nicolas Angeli) and will take place at the facility located on the Champenoux site (54280).

Content

  • Theory – First session (half day): Explanation of the source’s role and its various components / Pre-maintenance testing concepts / Precautions to take during maintenance.
  • Practical session on Elementar UK equipment (formerly Isoprime) (2 days): Pre-tests to perform / Source disassembly / Cleaning protocol / Drying / Source reassembly / Source parameter adjustment.
  • Theory – Second session (half day): Discussion session to address other aspects of IRMS maintenance (optional topics) / A summary of these discussions will be compiled and sent afterward.

Prerequisites: This training is intended for personnel with prior experience or knowledge of isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS).

Practical Informations

  • Cost: €1000 (excl. tax) per person
  • Audience: IRMS users (Technicians – Engineers – Researchers/Faculty – PhD students – Postdoctoral researchers)
  • Number of participants: As this training is highly practical and involves handling instruments and samples, the maximum number of trainees is limited to 6 people.
  • Location: LEGF Room, INRAE Nancy Center, Champenoux, FRANCE
